Mosquito Control:
Dare County Mosquito Control assists Dare County residents and visitors by suppressing local mosquito populations and helping to eliminate potential mosquito-borne diseases. Mosquito Control works to safely and economically control mosquitoes at a safe and tolerable level, therefore reducing the risk of mosquito-borne diseases and the nuisance level to acceptable/safe conditions.
The primary focus is on reducing the viral risk, and the operational emphasis is on habitat reduction/elimination and larval control. Ultra-low volume (ULV) spraying is used only as needed for the control of adult mosquitoes.
Yes! Various mosquito species tend to breed in artificial containers, tires and tree holes, and they stay close to humans in order to keep a blood meal readily available. As a result, these mosquitoes don’t need to leave the area to complete the process of repopulating. Even small quantities of water in containers such as bottles and buckets can provide an ample breeding opportunity for these species.
To help reduce the number of mosquitoes in and around your property, avoid leaving these types of containers outside where they may collect rainwater and become a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. In order to help control these mosquito populations, any containers that will collect rainwater on your property should be tipped over, removed or cleaned regularly. The primary pesticides that are used in the larval control operations have very low human/mammalian toxicity, and most of these pesticides are very environmentally friendly. Most are toxins produced by bacteria and are very specific to mosquitoes while they are in the larval stage.
The pesticides used to control the adult mosquitoes also have very low human/mammalian toxicity and have been used for many years. Most are "synthetic pyrethroids," which are man-made pesticides that mimic a natural product made from chrysanthemum plants.
