Competition Beyond Athletics:

The Silver Arts portion of the Senior Games was formed in 1986 to provide seniors in North Carolina with an outlet for creative expression. Silver Arts encompasses the values commonly seen in an athlete and a artist: discipline, dedication and a sense of accomplishment. The following five wide-ranging categories of art are showcased:

  • Visual arts
  • Literary arts
  • Performing arts
  • Heritage arts
  • Cheerleading

The Next Level

From the inaugural state finals in 1985 to the present, the state finals event is a celebration of the human spirit in the truest sense. These games offer participants much more than friendly competition. The games also provide individuals - both participants and volunteers - with an opportunity to showcase their talents, renew old skills and learn new ones. Perhaps most importantly, the games allow everyone involved to join together in what has come to be called the Senior Games family.

Over 900 state finals volunteers serve as event staff annually at state finals, many of whom continue to return year after year.

Qualifiers from local games are invited to participate in the annual senior games state finals that are held every fall. Every two years, the winners of the state finals qualify for the National Senior Games.

History of the Senior Games

In 1983, the North Carolina Senior Games (NCSG) started with a vision of a year-round health promotion and wellness education program for adults who are 50 years of age and older.*  The mission is truly grassroots in North Carolina and has placed our state far beyond other states due to its participant-driven structure.

The Outer Banks Senior Games (OBSG) was established in 1989 with the same goals of promoting health and wellness and are sanctioned by the North Carolina Senior Games. Today, there are over 60,000 total participants across North Carolina, and Dare County hosts one of 54 local games in the state.

2024 36th Annual Dare County Senior Games Recap

Achievement is recognized with gold, silver and bronze awards, as well as the privilege of representing Dare County in the statewide North Carolina Senior Games with the possibility to advance to the National Senior Games. While the program honors personal and team accomplishments, the mission of the Outer Banks Senior Games is to promote healthy active lifestyles for seniors in our community.
