HISTORY
The Thomas A. Baum Senior Center was dedicated on December 7, 1987 in honor of a Dare County pioneer in transportation. Thomas A Baum designed, built, and operated ferries in the early 1900's and was an advocate of local economic development. The Baum family preserved this tract of land for public use in recognition of the love Thomas A Baum had for the Outer Banks.
MISSION STATEMENT
The Thomas A. Baum Senior Center offers a wide variety of programs and activities to promote active and healthy lifestyles for older adults and provides opportunities for recreation, socialization, nutrition, and health support services, for Dare County residents, who are 55 and older.

Jenna moved to Kill Devil Hills in 2016 with her husband, David, and two kids, Evan and Chloe. Before assuming duties as the senior center’s director, Jenna worked in the Dare County Parks and Recreation Department. She also served as the Fitness and Aquatics Director at both the Norfolk Yacht Club and the MWR Department for the Naval Base Guam. Jenna has been a part of the health and wellness industry for over 25 years with certifications in athletic training, personal training, and group fitness. She graduated from Old Dominion University with a BS in Exercise Science and obtained her MBA in Sports Business from Saint Leo University. Her passion is encouraging the older adult community toward a fulfilling lifestyle with a high level of physical, mental, and social wellness.

Aubrey is originally from Colorado. She moved to North Carolina to work with a “wilder” clientele , the endangered red wolves, before transiting into fitness. Aubrey started with Dare County in 2005 with a background in martial arts and yoga and holds certifications as a group fitness instructor, yoga instructor, Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention instructor, and a certified Senior Fitness Specialist. She is also CPR w/AED and First Aid certified. Aubrey serves the Dare County Senior Games' Event Director and looks forward to helping Dare County residents stay moving and active for life.

Jodie has been part of the Outer Banks Community since 1992 and is a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a B.A. in Media Arts. Before working at our senior center, she was the Volunteer Coordinator for Dare Hospice.

Debbie has many years of Administrative experience in areas such as General, Legal, Medical and Construction with the State, Local and Federal Government Agencies and private sector and has owned and operated three family businesses up until Covid. She has been married to her best friend for over 31 years with two children. She has owned a home in the OBX area since 2014 and was just a weekend warrior until March 2022 when she joyfully relocated to the area permanently from the Richmond, Va. Debbie enjoys the great outdoors, shopping and cooking.

Laura moved to Manns Harbor in 2018. She has been a part of the Baum Center's family since 2021. She enjoys the interaction with the center's visitors, as she says " they make my time here so worthwhile"!

Hayley, originally from Elizabeth City, graduated from COA with an Associate of Arts Degree and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreation, Parks and Tourism Management from UNCG Greensboro and is CPR W/AED certified. She started with Dare County in 2017 in the Tax Department as a Real Property Appraisal Technician, before transferring to the Baum Center in August 2023, and is excited to be a part of the team. Hayley loves being outside and enjoying the activities that Dare County has to offer. She loves swimming, crafting things out of recyclables, and taking part in beach cleanups. She looks forward to giving back to the community she lives in and loves.
