Book Club in a Bag 

 We are very excited to announce the launch of our Book Club in a Bag Kits. These kits contain 12 copies of a book, a book assignment tracker, discussion questions, and additional resources about the book. The books cover a broad range of fiction and non-fiction. Whether you’re just starting a book club or looking for something new for an existing club, this Kit is just the thing! 

General Information:

• A representative may check out one Book Club in a Bag kit at a time. That person is responsible for all twelve (12) copies in the set. A Liability Waiver must be signed and will be kept on file while the set is checked out.  
• Sets must be reserved in-person or via phone call; they cannot be reserved through the online catalog. Sets may be reserved up to twelve (12) months in advance. Contacts to reserve sets at each library are below. 
• Sets may be checked out for thirty (30) days. There is a seven (7) day turnaround between a set being returned and available to check out to the next hold request. 
• The Book Club in a Bag kit must be returned, in its entirety (all copies of the book, the bag, and the attached barcode), to a Dare County Library. Please DO NOT put it in the book drop.
• Please return the books in the same condition that you received them. Charges for lost or damaged books will be assessed when the set is returned.

Portable DVD Player Kits

Dare County Library now offers portable DVD video players for checkout to library cardholders over the age of 18 from the Hatteras, Kill Devil Hills, and Manteo Libraries.  

• The kit must be borrowed from and returned to the library during business hours.

• Borrowers must be Adult or Property Owner library card holders.

• Library card must be in good standing.

Dare County Library in Kill Devil Hills is excited to

be a part of the North Carolina Arboretum’s

ecoEXPLORE.net initiative

ecoEXPLORE (Experiences Promoting Learning Outdoors for Research and Education) is an incentive-based citizen science program for children in grades K-8. Developed by the North Carolina Arboretum, this innovative program combines science exploration with kid-friendly technology to foster a fun learning environment for children while encouraging them to explore the outdoors and participate in citizen science.

Explorer Backpacks

The Kill Devil Hills Library has three ecoEXPLORE adventurer backpacks available for three-week checkouts. Each backpack contains a butterfly net, "bug-noculars, "a bug house, a mini magnifying glass, a bird call and an outdoor camera for capturing wildlife at night.

Patrons may take the backpacks home and explore wherever they'd like.

Make your exploration official citizen science by signing up online at ecoEXPLORE.net to submit your findings and help professional scientists collect data.

Stop by the Hatteras Library to check out one of six Explore Kits that branch manager Michelle Lord has put together. They can be used for your own exploring or with ecoEXPLORE.net activities. 

To start earning badges, you'll need to create an ecoEXPLORE account. Then you'll submit photos and complete nature themed challenges in your dashboard to earn badges!

Dare County Library External CD/DVD Drive

Dare County Library offers external CD/DVD drives for checkout to library cardholders over the age of 18 from the Hatteras, Kill Devil Hills, and Manteo Libraries.  

• The external CD/DVD drive must be borrowed from and returned to the library during business hours. 

• Borrowers must be Adult or Property Owner library card holders.

• Library card must be in good standing.

• Drives may be checked out for 1 week.

Description

This external drive connects to a USB port for burning, reading, and ripping CDs and DVDs. It is compatible with desktops and laptops with Windows OS, Mac OS and Linux OS. The kit includes the external CD/DVD drive with attached USB-A connector, USB-C adapter, instruction manual, and carrying case.

Dare County Library Telescope Program

 As a participant in the international Library Telescope Program, Dare County Library offers Telescope Kits at the Kill Devil Hills Library, Manteo Library, and the Hatteras Library for checkout to Dare County residents and property owners. 

• The kit must be borrowed from and returned to the same library branch during business hours.

• Borrowers must be Dare County Adult or Property Owner library card holders over the age of 18.

• Library card must be in good standing.

• Patrons must complete a Library Telescope Borrower Agreement at checkout. 

• Check out is for 1 week. Overdue fines of $1.00 per day may apply for late returns.

The Telescope Kit comes with 

• Telescope with finder scope and stand (1) 

• Headlamp with red light (1)

• Instruction sheet

The Astronomy Kit is also available for check out. It contains: 

• Binoculars (1)  

• Astronomy books (4) 

• Planisphere (1)

 Litter Clean-Up Kits

 The Dare County Library is excited to offer Litter Clean-Up Kits. These kits are available for checkout at the Hatteras Library, Kill Devil Hills Library and Manteo Library.

Each kit includes:  5-gallon bucket

 4 litter grabbers

 2 trash bags

 2 pairs of disposable gloves

 Surfrider Beach Cleanup data card

• Litter Clean-Up Kits should be returned to the library during business hours.  Please do not leave kits outside over the weekend or overnight.

• Returned kits should include: Bucket, 4 Litter Grabbers, and Completed Surfrider Beach Cleanup data card.

• Kits may be checked out for 1 week.

• 10 smaller litter grabbers, provided by the Surfrider Foundation, are available for checkout. These smaller grabbers are suitable for adults and children.

Dare County Library offers metal detectors for checkout to library cardholders over the age of 18 from the Hatteras, Kill Devil Hills, and Manteo Libraries.  

• The metal detector must be borrowed from and returned to the library during business hours.
• Borrowers must be Adult or Property Owner library card holders.
• Library card must be in good standing.

Dare County Library now offers paper shredders for checkout to library cardholders over the age of 18 from the Hatteras, Kill Devil Hills, and Manteo Libraries.  

• The paper shredder must be borrowed from and returned to the library during business hours. 

• Borrowers must be Adult or Property Owner library card holders.

• Library card must be in good standing.

• Paper shredders may be checked out for 1 week.

Top-loading paper shredders shred 8 sheets at a time for secure disposal of documents at home.
