Peer Power

Peer Power is a peer health education program where high school students are trained as health educators to positively influence elementary and middle school student’s health behaviors related to:

  • Nutrition
  • Physical Activity
  • Alcohol
  • Tobacco
  • Other drug usage

After training is completed, Peer Power Health Educators teach elementary school and middle school students in Dare County schools 3-4 days a week.

School Health Nursing

Our department provides health services to Dare County Public School students by stationing public health nurses in each school. We are proud to provide services that include screening, assessment and evaluation, nursing care, health education for all students and additional case management services for students with chronic diseases and/or other special health care needs.

As part of their public health role, school nurses participate in surveillance and reporting of infectious or communicable diseases, provide general first aid and referrals related to minor illnesses and injuries, and track school entry required vaccines to ensure that the children of Dare County meet NC requirements.
