The Breaking Through Task Force of Dare County, partnering with Dare County Department of Health & Human Services, is excited to announce it will be offering an Adult Mental Health First Aid virtual course on September 16, 2026. This evidence-based, skills-focused training helps participants learn how to respond to adults with mental health and substance use challenges as well as provide the support they need to find the right kind of care.
The course, free and open to anyone who lives, works, or worships in Dare County, will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and teaches the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE), which is a set of steps you can use in any order to support someone who may be going through a difficult time.
“Mental health challenges affect everyone, yet many people feel unequipped to help,” said certified Adult and Youth MHFA instructor Kelly Fleming, who is also Breaking Through Task Force co-chair and Dare County Department of Health & Human Services Health Education & Outreach Supervisor. “This course removes the fear and hesitation, giving people a concrete plan to support their friends, family, and coworkers.”
Participants who complete the course will receive a 3-year national certification in Mental Health First Aid.
It is recommended that course participants have a computer with a webcam, microphone, and speakers. The course includes two hours of pre-course work. Registration is required and can be done by clicking here.
Created in 2001 in Australia, Mental Health First Aid has been available in the United States since 2008. Mental Health First Aid USA is operated by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing in partnership with the Missouri Department of Mental Health.
