Anna Miller, a Dare County Department of Health & Human Services Public Health Nurse II – School Nurse who serves at First Flight Elementary School in Kill Devil Hills, has been named Dare County Employee of the Month for August 2026. The prestigious award was presented to Miller by School Nurse Supervisor Mandi Ferguson during the Dare County Board of Commissioners meeting that was held at 9 a.m. on Monday, August 3, 2026.

As she began her Employee of the Month presentation, Ferguson shared a brief overview of Miller’s career with Dare County and reflected on the positive impact she has made throughout her years of service.

“This morning, I have the honor of recognizing our August Employee of the Month and sharing a little about her,” Ferguson said. “Anna Miller began her career with the county in April of 2017, and she’s been a valued member of our team for the past nine years.”

Ferguson went on to describe Miller as someone who immediately makes others feel comfortable and welcome, noting that her kindness and genuine care for her coworkers are among the many qualities that have made her such a valued member of the team.

“When I joined the team, Anna was one of the very first people to reach out to welcome me, and she has never stopped,” Ferguson said. “This is just who she is. More importantly, she didn’t just do that for me; she does it for every new team member who joins our team."

According to Ferguson, that same spirit of compassion extends beyond Miller’s relationships with her coworkers and is displayed in the dedication she shows to the students she serves each day—as well as the guidance she provides to her fellow school nurses.

“Throughout her time with the county, Anna has consistently demonstrated kindness, dedication and an unwavering commitment to both her students and her colleagues," she said. “In addition to the care she provides for her own students, Anna is also a mentor to many of our elementary school nurses, helping them with planning and organizing their own classroom education.”

As she continued her presentation, Ferguson also emphasized Miller’s willingness to go above and beyond whenever she’s needed, noting that she is always eager to lend a hand and take on additional responsibilities to assist others wherever she can.

“Anna has stepped up to lead in many areas and often is the first to volunteer when something needs to be done,” she said. “For example, if we ever need a county car moved from Hatteras to Manteo or Manteo to Hatteras, Anna usually is the first to raise her hand to volunteer, often saying, ‘I was going to head that way anyway. No worries.’ I don't, in fact, think she was ever ‘headed that way.’ The simple statement just perfectly captures her willingness to help out without expecting anything in return.”

These same qualities were echoed by Miller’s colleagues, one of whom praised her dependable nature, positive attitude and unwavering support for both her teammates within the Department of Health & Human Services and the students in her care at First Flight Elementary School.

“One of her colleagues shared these words,” Ferguson said: “‘Anna has been an incredible lifeline since I started. She’s a dependable team member who continually shows kindness and a positive attitude. She’s always willing to answer questions and assist others while showing up every day for the kids at her school.’”

As she concluded her remarks and presented Miller with the August 2026 Dare County Employee of the Month award, Ferguson commented, “Anna, thank you for the care that you show to your students, the encouragement you give to your coworkers, and the positive example you set every day. Your dedication doesn’t go unnoticed, and we’re really fortunate to have you as part of our team. Congrats on being named August Employee of the Month. This recognition is well deserved."
