Dare County reminds community members that a public meeting to discuss communication and coordination related to closures of N.C. Highway 12 on Hatteras Island will take place on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Fessenden Center, located at 46830 N.C. Highway 12 in Buxton.

The meeting follows the temporary closure of N.C. Highway 12 that occurred on July 24, 2026, when intense rainfall caused significant flooding that made portions of the roadway unsafe and impassable, leading the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to close N.C. Highway 12 from the Basnight Bridge to Rodanthe.

Representatives from Dare County and NCDOT will participate in the meeting. Discussion will include N.C. Highway 12 closure decisions and procedures, communication and coordination during closures, and ways to help ensure residents and visitors receive timely and accurate information when roadway conditions require a closure.

The meeting will include an opportunity for attendees to ask questions of Dare County and NCDOT representatives.
