Dare County invites residents, property owners and visitors to help identify locations in the unincorporated areas of the county where new or improved pedestrian crosswalks could enhance safety. The county is exploring opportunities to apply for funding through the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) 2026 Pedestrian Safety Project Call, which supports pedestrian safety improvements in smaller urban and rural communities. 

Eligible projects may include marked crosswalks, curb ramps, visibility enhancements, traffic control improvements at crossings, pedestrian signal enhancements and improved crossings at unsignalized or midblock locations.

As Dare County prepares potential grant applications, public input will play an important role in identifying locations where pedestrian improvements may be most beneficial.

Residents, visitors and property owners are encouraged to submit locations in the unincorporated areas of Dare County where they believe a crosswalk or other pedestrian crossing improvement is needed. Suggested locations should be on state-maintained roadways within the county's unincorporated areas.

The municipalities within Dare County received the same opportunity directly from NCDOT and will determine whether to pursue projects within their respective jurisdictions. As a result, Dare County is requesting feedback only for locations in the county's unincorporated areas.

Community members can submit their suggestions by completing the online survey available at info.darenc.gov/Crosswalks. The survey will remain open through August 14, 2026 to allow Dare County staff time to review submissions before NCDOT’s application deadline of August 28, 2026.

While submission of a suggested location does not guarantee that it will be included in a grant application or selected for funding, public feedback will help Dare County identify and prioritize potential pedestrian safety improvements that address community needs.
