The Dare County Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) is implementing a new AI-powered virtual phone assistant named EVA to better assist residents. EVA will be available 24 hours a day to answer questions and provide information to callers.
By utilizing EVA, DHHS aims to reduce wait times for callers needing swift transfers or answers to simple questions while allowing staff to focus efforts on helping callers with more complex needs. The new system will become fully operational on Monday, July 6, 2026.
“We have been testing this system as a way to better support and respond to residents attempting to reach our department,” said Chuck Lycett, Director of the Social Services Division. “EVA can quickly help answer questions, guide you through simple steps, and connect you to the right team even faster - all in your preferred language.”
One of the major advantages of the new system is its ability to communicate with callers in their preferred language. EVA can automatically recognize and adapt to a caller’s preferred language, helping improve accessibility and reduce communication barriers.
Beginning Monday, residents can reach EVA by calling the Public Health Division at 252.475.5003 or Social Services Division at 252.475.5500.
