All Dare County offices and facilities will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026 in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. These offices and facilities will reopen and operate with their regularly scheduled hours on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. 

These holiday closures include the Dare County C&D Landfill*, Manns Harbor Transfer Station, Buxton Transfer Station and Manteo Recycle Yard.

However, Dare County Public Works—which only provides trash collection for the unincorporated areas of the county as well as the Town of Kitty Hawk—has announced that there will be no changes to the Dare County Public Works trash collection schedule for the week of Memorial Day 2026.

All areas whose trash collection and sanitation services are provided by the Dare County Public Works Department will therefore operate on their normal schedule during the week of Monday, May 25, 2026 through Friday, May 29, 2026.

The Town of Kitty Hawk's Saturday residential trash collection for the east side (ocean side) of U.S. 158 (the bypass) will begin on Saturday, May 30, 2026 and continue through Labor Day. 

Commercial trash collection will also take place on Saturdays in the Town of Kitty Hawk, as well as the villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras, beginning on Saturday, May 30, 2026 and continuing through Labor Day.

Important Note: The Dare County Public Works Department only provides trash collection for the unincorporated areas of Dare County and the Town of Kitty Hawk. Unincorporated Dare County does not include areas within a town’s limits. If you are located within the Town of Kill Devil Hills, Town of Nags Head, Town of Manteo, Town of Duck or the Town of Southern Shores, please contact your municipality directly for information regarding any holiday closures or trash collection schedule changes that may impact your area.

*Reminder: The C&D Landfill side of the facility in Manns Harbor will be closed on Saturdays until further notice; however, the Transfer Station side of the facility will remain open during this time. Contractors who typically dispose of C&D materials at the landfill on Saturdays will still be able to dispose of those materials at the Transfer Station, which operates on the same property at 1603 Cub Road in Manns Harbor.
