The Dare County Water Department invites children from kindergarten through high school to participate in a Professor Faucet-themed coloring contest that will take place from Wednesday, April 15, 2026 to Friday, May 22, 2026!
Professor Faucet is Dare County’s educational water conservation character who helps residents and property owners learn how to protect water resources, use water wisely and prevent common plumbing issues through a series of fun facts, helpful tips and interactive activities. Designed to make water education engaging and accessible, Professor Faucet—along with his surfboard-turned-lab kit—encourages members of the Dare County community to take an active role in caring for this essential resource.
Coloring contest participants in elementary school can obtain a free official coloring page from the Dare County Water Department to personalize, while participants in middle school and high school are encouraged to create their own original Professor Faucet-themed design. Participants should also be sure to include at least one fun fact about water or a water-saving tip on their artwork.
Official coloring sheets can be picked up at the Dare County Water Department offices in Kill Devil Hills (600 Mustian Street) and Frisco (50225 Water Association Road), or downloaded online at DareNC.gov/Water. All completed entries—whether using the official coloring sheet or an original design—must be returned in person to either the Kill Devil Hills or Frisco office by Friday, May 22, 2026 at 5 p.m.
Once the Professor Faucet coloring contest entries are submitted, a total of four winners will be chosen—one from each age group, as follows:
- Kindergarten to 2nd Grade
- 3rd Grade to 5th Grade
- 6th Grade to 8th Grade
- High School
Each winner will receive two free tickets to the H2OBX Waterpark, located at 8526 Caratoke Highway in Powells Point, NC.
Reminder: The deadline to submit an entry for the coloring contest is Friday, May 22, 2026 at 5 p.m. Entries must be returned to the Dare County Water Department offices in either Kill Devil Hills or Frisco.

Originally created in the late 1990s, Professor Faucet was designed to educate and inform water customers throughout Dare County by providing little-known factoids and dispelling an assortment of myths regarding water. In 2024—more than 25 years after he made made his initial debut in the pages of The Coastland Times in 1998— Professor Faucet made a comeback, this time boasting a brand-new look that includes the surfboard-turned-lab kit that he uses to battle water issues and share his expertise when it comes to all things water!
Each month at DareNC.gov/Faucet (under the “Professor Faucet in Action” tab) and within various local news publications and platforms covering Dare County, Professor Faucet asks a water-related question for inquiring minds to answer. Dare County water customers will then have a two-week period to submit their responses to the Dare County Water Department for a chance to win a one-of-a-kind Dare County Professor Faucet t-shirt.
