Since 1870, Dare County Deputies have been doing their part to help make our community on the Outer Banks, Roanoke Island and the mainland of Dare County a better place to live, work and visit. With a current staff of 147 Deputies and support personnel, the Dare County Sheriff's Office is a full-service law enforcement agency working within various divisions. We also run a great Summer Camp for our youth.

On March 11, 2026, approximately 12:30 p.m., Deputies from B-District of the Dare County Sheriff’s Office were notified of a stolen vehicle out of Virginia traveling towards Nags Head, NC. Deputies stopped the vehicle, and the operator was subsequently taken into custody.

Charles B. E. Smith, M/27, from Forest, VA was charged with the following:

  • Felony Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle
  • (M) No Operators License

Smith has been issued a $15,000 secured bond in lieu of these charges. After communication with the originating agency, extradition warrants were obtained, and an additional $35,000 secured bond was issued.

Additional Charges were filed by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The Nags Head Police Department also assisted with the incident.
