With a current staff of 147 Deputies and support personnel, the Dare County Sheriff's Office is a full-service law enforcement agency working within various divisions. We also run a great Summer Camp for our youth.

On February 26, 2026, at approximately 4:20 p.m., the Dare County Sheriff’s Office was requested to assist NC Probation in the Kill Devil Hills area for a search. 

The search resulted in the discovery and seizure of an amount of methamphetamine, controlled substances, and drug paraphernalia.

Michael J. Hurley, M/37, from Kill Devil Hills, NC, was arrested and charged with: 

  • Felony Possession of Methamphetamine 
  • Felony Possession of a Schedule I Controlled Substance
  • (M) Simple Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance
  • (M) Possession of Marijuana up to ½ oz
  • (M) Possession of Drug Paraphernalia 
  • (M) Possession of Marijuana Paraphernalia 

Hurley is currently being held without bond at the Dare County Detention Center.
