North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Announces Launch of NC Medicaid Managed Care Website

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has announced the launch of the NC Medicaid Managed Care enrollment website, www.ncmedicaidplans.gov.

The website is designed to help beneficiaries learn more about Medicaid Managed Care and was launched in preparation for the NC Medicaid Managed Care program, which is scheduled to start on July 1, 2021.

Open enrollment for NC Medicaid Managed Care will begin on March 15, 2021, and it will continue through May 14, 2021.

The new enrollment website provides information about who will need to choose a health plan, who will stay in the traditional Medicaid program—which is known as NC Medicaid Direct—and who will be able to choose between the two.

The website also contains information about the basic medical and behavioral health benefits that are offered by the NC Medicaid Managed Care program. In addition, a list of frequently asked questions and their corresponding answers will be posted on the website in order to help beneficiaries to better understand the program and any changes to their current health plan.

Most individuals who are currently receiving Medicaid benefits will need to enroll in Medicaid Managed Care. These Medicaid beneficiaries will be able to choose from five health plans: WellCare, United HealthCare, Healthy Blue, AmeriHealth Caritas and Carolina Complete Health (which serves regions 3, 4 and 5).

Those who are federally recognized tribal members or who qualify for Indian Health Services are exempt from managed care. Those who live in the North Carolina counties of Cherokee, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, or Swain or in a neighboring county may choose to enroll in the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nations Tribal Option.

A small number of individuals will not need to choose a Medicaid Managed Care health plan because of the type of health services that they require. These individuals will remain enrolled in NC Medicaid Direct.
