The
Fessenden Center serves as the central community center on Hatteras Island. Located in Buxton overlooking Pamlico Sound, the Fessenden Center is where the majority of Hatteras Island Parks and Recreation programming is held.

The Fessenden Center sits on the site formerly known as the Deforest Wireless Station. In 1902, Reginald Fessenden transmitted the first musical notes from this spot in Buxton to Roanoke Island.
