The Marshall and Gussie Collins walkway is open for the public to enjoy and extends approximately 2 miles from the Dare County Government Complex in Manteo to the Coastal Studies Institute in Skyco, meandering through scenic woodlands and along the marsh. It is a wonderful way for families to discover a beautiful part of Roanoke Island.
The walkway is dedicated to the remarkable African-American couple that owned and farmed the land surrounding the walkway and government complex. According to historian David Stick, “Marshall Claude Collins was a native and lifelong resident of Roanoke Island, a man widely liked and highly respected, and a leader in his community.”
This walkway was funded and maintained by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).
